Why most people overpack for Latin America

Hey Reader,

Before we left for Latin America, we spent weeks worrying about what to pack.

Extra clothes.

Extra shoes.

Extra medicines.

Extra "just in case" items.

Like most families, we were trying to prepare for every possible scenario.

The funny thing is, the more we packed, the less confident we felt.

Every item seemed important.

Every gadget felt essential.

Every extra jumper somehow became a necessity.

Then we arrived and realised something.

Most of the things we worried about bringing could have been bought locally for a fraction of the cost and stress.

We recently put together a guide on the things we're glad we packed, the things we never used, and the simple packing rules that helped us stop carrying half our house around with us.

The things we actually needed weren't the things taking up all the space in our bags.

They were things like:

A simple way to access money.

Reliable internet.

A plan if someone got sick.

Enough flexibility to adapt when things changed.

The reality is that Latin America isn't some remote wilderness where you need to carry six months of supplies on your back.

There are supermarkets.

Pharmacies.

Shopping centres.

Laundry services.

And plenty of places selling things you forgot.

We started out thinking the challenge was fitting everything into our luggage.

It turns out the real challenge was deciding what not to bring.

One thing that helped us was following a simple rule:

If we could buy it locally, we didn't pack it.

That single decision probably saved us half a suitcase.

Ironically, while we were obsessing over whether we needed an extra pair of trainers, we spent far less time thinking about things that would have a much bigger impact if they went wrong.

Things like travel insurance.

Those are the boring decisions nobody wants to make, but they're the ones we're always glad we've sorted before a trip.

If you're still planning your travels, here's a simple question:

"What am I packing because I genuinely need it, and what am I packing because I'm nervous?"

The answer might free up more space than you think.

On Monday, I'll share the things we packed completely wrong for Latin America — including a few items that never should have made it into our bags in the first place.

Sean

P.S. We still packed too much. Almost every family we meet says the same thing. Nobody ever seems to regret packing less.

Hey Reader When we first arrived in Latin America, we thought we'd keep things simple. Just use roaming. Job done. No researching SIM cards. No comparing providers. No figuring out which network worked in which country. It felt like the easiest option. The problem? It was also the most expensive. At first, we didn't think much about it. A few pounds here. A few pounds there. But over time those charges started adding up. A quick Word from our sponsors And because we were travelling long-term...

Hey Reader, A few months ago, I would have told you the first thing we book is accommodation. Or flights. Or maybe even airport transfers if we’re arriving late with the kids. After travelling through Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, that’s no longer true. Planning a Trip soon? This is the travel insurance we've been using across Latin America Check SafetyWing Coverage The first thing we book now is peace of mind. That sounds cheesy, but hear me out. When you’re travelling as a...

Hey Reader, We massively overpacked. Like… embarrassingly so. At the start of this trip, we had bags full of “just in case” stuff. Extra clothes. Backup shoes. Things we might need. And within the first couple of weeks, we realised: We weren’t using half of it. The worst offenders? Jeans. They’re heavy, slow to dry, and take up way too much space. We each packed a pair thinking they’d be useful. They weren’t. Same with extra shoes. Each of us had more than we needed, and they just became dead...
