We wasted money on this for weeks

Hey Reader

When we first arrived in Latin America, we thought we'd keep things simple.

Just use roaming.

Job done.

No researching SIM cards.

No comparing providers.

No figuring out which network worked in which country.

It felt like the easiest option.

The problem?

It was also the most expensive.

At first, we didn't think much about it.

A few pounds here.

A few pounds there.

But over time those charges started adding up.

A quick Word from our sponsors

And because we were travelling long-term rather than taking a two-week holiday, we quickly realised we were paying far more than we needed to.

The other issue was reliability.

Some places had great coverage.

Others didn't.

Sometimes we'd arrive somewhere new and immediately start hunting for Wi-Fi just to work out what was going on.

Not ideal when you're trying to book accommodation, organise transport or find your way around a new city.

Eventually, we switched to eSIMs.

Honestly, I wish we'd done it sooner.

Being able to land in a new country with data already working felt like a small thing, but it removed a surprising amount of stress from travel.

No airport SIM card queues.

No language barriers.

No hunting for phone shops.

Just internet from the moment we arrived.

Over nine months, it became one of those travel decisions that quietly made everything easier.

If you're planning a trip, we've put together a guide comparing the eSIMs we've used, what worked best and the option we'd personally choose again.

Safe travels,

Sean

P.S. We spent far too much time worrying about packing the right adapter. Having reliable internet turned out to be far more important.

Hey Reader, Before we left for Latin America, we spent weeks worrying about what to pack. Extra clothes. Extra shoes. Extra medicines. Extra "just in case" items. Like most families, we were trying to prepare for every possible scenario. The funny thing is, the more we packed, the less confident we felt. Every item seemed important. Every gadget felt essential. Every extra jumper somehow became a necessity. Then we arrived and realised something. Most of the things we worried about bringing...

Hey Reader, A few months ago, I would have told you the first thing we book is accommodation. Or flights. Or maybe even airport transfers if we’re arriving late with the kids. After travelling through Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, that’s no longer true. Planning a Trip soon? This is the travel insurance we've been using across Latin America Check SafetyWing Coverage The first thing we book now is peace of mind. That sounds cheesy, but hear me out. When you’re travelling as a...

Hey Reader, We massively overpacked. Like… embarrassingly so. At the start of this trip, we had bags full of “just in case” stuff. Extra clothes. Backup shoes. Things we might need. And within the first couple of weeks, we realised: We weren’t using half of it. The worst offenders? Jeans. They’re heavy, slow to dry, and take up way too much space. We each packed a pair thinking they’d be useful. They weren’t. Same with extra shoes. Each of us had more than we needed, and they just became dead...
